Are girls safe in Delhi, India

Delhi the city of dreams

Delhi, the city of dreams for some, and the city of dead humans for some others with more than 20 million population which is estimated to reach by 22 million in 2021. Delhi is the second most populated city in the country and unfortunately, it’s also one among the most unsafe city also.

Delhi is famous for several things. You can easily find everything in Delhi from chaotic traffic to stunning Mughal era monuments. But What you will not find in Delhi is safety for Girls.

Some survey results

In today’s time, women have achieved a lot in every field from political to economic, educational to sports but for some people, women are still considered as sex objects.

According to a survey done by voluntary organizations‘ Jagori’ and UN development fund for women, in 2010, it is being found that 80% of women residing in Delhi fear their safety.

Remember the day when a medical student was gang-raped in Delhi

It has passed almost 7 years when a 23-year medical student was gang-raped in Delhi in a bus. It led to huge outrage in Delhi, and the government even made some strict rape laws for the woman. But were the laws useful to make capital safer for women?

Almost every day I pick up the newspaper, it carries too many stories of rapes and molestations in the country capital. According to data revealed by Delhi Police, 5 women were raped every day in Delhi in 2018. A total of 2,043 rape cases and 3,175 of molestation cases were registered in Delhi in 2018. According to a data published in India today, Delhi police revealed that 5 women were raped and 8 were molested each day on an average in 2018 in our national capital.

Another dark side of the city

Delhi is not only famous for its rape culture, but there is another dark side of the city also which you can easily find after dawn time. South Delhi, on one side it’s famous for its educational institutions, on the other side it is famous for sex workers. According to an article published in India today, after dawn when the shutters of high-end showrooms in a four km. stretch from Hauz Khas and green park come down, trade of sex workers start over there. The area from Hauz Khas to green park and till AIIMS could easily be seen occupied by female sex workers standing on the roads, men come in their cars and pick them up from there and drop them at the same place. This hub of flesh trade of girls is not only restricted to these places only, Chandni Chowk, Paharganj, G.B.road are also some among the red light areas of Delhi.

According to a survey done by the Indian Ministry of health and welfare, there are nearly 3500 female sex workers in G.B. Road. Most of the workers working in G.B. road are either trafficked from Nepal or from other neighboring countries. Every sex worker working in G.B. Road have their own sad stories about how they come into this business. Majority of them are being sold by their own family members and relatives. To feed their stomach, they have to sell their body 15 to 20 times a day. However, there were several steps taken up by the government for the safety of girls in Delhi.

Remedies available

However, several apps such as eye watch SOS, b safe, smart 24×7 are some of the apps started for the safety of women. Gandhiji had once said that India will gain its true independence when its women can move freely even at midnight without having fear in their mind of being molested or raped.

Abortion: Legal or illegal in India

Abortion has been made legal in India 50 years back, but it is still considered a Taboo in our country, or the majority of people are not even aware that it is completely legal in India for married as well as unmarried women.   The law that Legalises the same is Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 2002 and the law that criminalises the same is IPC (Section 312 to Section 318 of IPC).    Well, the only line of difference between the 2 statues is that of " GOOD FAITH" and " WOMEN CONSENT".   MTP Act says that when a pregnancy of women is terminated with the consent of women, in good faith, it is completely legal, and no doctor can be prosecuted if it terminates pregnancy as per MTP Act and Rules.    As per MTP Act and Rules, Pregnancy of a Women can be terminated up to 24 weeks with the consent of the Woman. If the pregnancy is more than 20 weeks but up to 24 weeks, then opinion of 2 Registered Medical Practitioner shall be required. Recently Supreme Court i...

It was from the mid 19th century, women started raising their voice and some changes were done in Indian Statues and laws for their well being.
